Pathways to good practice in regional NRM governance

A Land and Water Australia funded project, supported by Department of Sustainability &
Environment (Vic) and Department of Natural Resources (NSW)

BULLETIN NO. 2                                                              10th October 2006

Reference Group Meeting

The first meeting of the Partner Reference Group and Research Team (see photo above) was held in Albury on the 8th September 2006. The workshop confirmed that the project is addressing a crucial issue for regional NRM. Representatives from nine regional bodies and the Australian, NSW and Victorian governments provided constructive comment on the direction of the project, and offered many insights into the governance issues and challenges they face. These comments have been used by the Research Ream to more closely align the work with partners’ needs. A revised set of objectives and deliverables has been prepared by the Research Team, and approved by Land & water Australia. Details will be posted on our website soon. The partners are now looking forward to a series of meetings with the research team that will take place over the next 12 months to collect the data needed to benchmark current governance. The next step will then be to develop the tools that will enable tracking of governance performance, as well as aspects that should be targeted for improvement. The meeting also discussed the communications plan, and the partners supported the use of a number of methods to keep stakeholders in touch with the work and to promulgate the research results – these include a printed report series that will be circulated to key stakeholders, a website, and regular update bulletins such as this one.

First Project Report Underway

Preparation of a report on regional NRM governance principles is well under way. This report will outline the theoretical basis for governance principles and explain the development of a specific set of principles that can be used to benchmark and assess regional NRM governance. More details will be given in the next bulletin.
