Objectives of the Student Chapter

The common objectives of the Student Chapter and the Society of Economic Geologists are as follows:

· To advance the science of geology through the scientific investigation of mineral deposits and mineral resources and the application thereof to minerals exploration, mineral resource appraisal, mining, and mineral extraction endeavours;

· To disseminate basic and applied scientific information arising from investigations of mineral deposits and mineral resources through Society publications, meetings, conferences, symposia, field trips, short courses, workshops, and lecture series; and

· To advance the status of the profession of economic geology and maintain a high professional and ethical standard among Society members.

The SEG Student Chapter are proud to announce that Bill Pennell of  Rio Tinto will be hosting several one day workshops at CODES throughout October 2007.

Please make an effort to attend, as this will provide students with an opportunity to learn more about the life on in exploration.

Kyushu Field Excursion, 2007

The SEG Student Chapter to the Kyushu District ran successfully at the end of July 2007. The trip included visits to the Hatchobaru and Ogiri geothermal power stations; several volcanoes (some of which were very active on the day!) including Mt. Aso, Mt. Kuju, Sakura Jima and Kaimon Dake; and finished with visits to the Akeshi and Kasuga Nansatsu District (High Sulphidation) Au (Ag) Deposits and the world-famous Hishikari LS epithermal Au-mine.

The SEG Student Chapter would like to thank Professor Izawa, Professor Tagushi and Associate Professor Nakanishi for leading such an exciting, interesting and well-structured trip, and also for introducing us to many Japanese experiences and indeed the wonderful culture.

Please go to the ‘fieldtrips’ page to read more about the trip, and if you would like to purchase a copy of the field-guide accompanying the trip (compiled in-house), then please see either Anita or Nathan ($25).

SEG Wine: New lines Added

Three new SEG wines have been added to the wines currently being sold by the Student Chapter. These include the Dromana Shiraz, a Victorian Shiraz-Cabernet and the Yarra Valley Sauvignon Blanc, all priced <$15. These will be on sale at the quiz night.

SEG Quiz Night

Many thanks to all those who attended the quiz night last month. Much fun was had by all, with some funds actually raised. Many thanks to Tony Crawford and his family for hosting the event and putting together an excellent range of questions (though the CODES staff identification round was just plain wrong on many levels!).

See the ‘events’ page for pictures and a wrap-up of this event.

SEG Final Event of the Year

The final big social event for this year run by this year’s SEG committee  will be a Christmas bowling night (following the enthusiasm for the first). The structure of this evening will be slightly more competitive on both a team and individual level. More details will be announced.
